Prayer

Prayer Renewal and Commitment Emphasis

Let's join together as a church family and focus on prayer during the next 40 days of the Lenten Season leading up to Easter.

Here are 40 ways you can pray during this time:

  1. Schedule a time in the “prayer room/closet.”
  2. Walk the church property each week.
  3. Take a personal solitude day/weekend.
  4. Pray daily for a seeker you know.
  5. Incorporate a family prayer time.
  6. Take a nature walk and praise God for who He is.
  7. Drive and pray for the church neighborhood each day.
  8. Let your children hear you pray for them each day.

  13. Go into your children’s room at night and pray over them.
  14. Come early Sunday morning and pray before the service.
  15. Drive your neighborhood and pray for your neighbors.
  16. Pray silently for each person you greet on a Sunday morning.
  17. Arrive at work 15 minutes early and spend time praying for your co-workers.
  18. Pray in the rooms where restoration/recovery classes meet.
  19. Create a “prayer room/place” in your home.
  20. Memorize Scriptures on prayer.
  21. Do a “word” study on prayer.

  23. As a family, read a book on prayer and talk about it.
  24. Drive to the parking lot of another church and pray over the pastor and congregation.
  25. Walk the one-mile perimeter of the church and pray over the community.
  26. Get a copy of the church directory and pray over each person by name.
  27. Pray for the people and situations you read about in the newspaper or hear about on the news.
  28. Send a prayer card of encouragement to someone for whom you’re praying.
  29. Purchase a praise CD of prayers and listen in the car.
  30. Drive to the places in your city where the enemy is at work and pray (bars, occult stores, etc.).
  31. Meet for a specific time in the “prayer room” with some individuals.
  32. Start a praise journal writing down previous answers to prayer.
  33. Spend some time talking to others about their own prayer life journey.
  34. Ask family and friend for specific ways you could pray for them.
  35. Incorporate prayer into your life in some different way each day.
  36. Be “silent” before the Lord and “listen” to what He desires to say to you.
  37. Start a “Ten Most Wanted List.” (Pray for ten people who need the Lord.)

The 21-Day Challenge

This morning I preached on "Discovering God's Will" at the First Baptist Church of Tupelo. I ended the sermon by sharing the following story:

My wife and I had lunch with friends who were visiting from a distant city. As we began our meal, the thought passed through my mind that the husband looked more relaxed than I had seen him in a long time. I soon discovered the reason for his calm demeanor. He told me about a simple prayer he had been praying at the beginning of each new day. He heard a noted Christian leader suggest using this prayer for 21 days. My friend said that he had tried it and that the prayer had made a profound difference in his life.At that point his wife chimed in to say that she had noticed a drastic difference in him as well.

Before he started praying the prayer, he often came home tense over things that had happened to him during the day. But now he comes home relaxed and in a good mood. As I listened, I wondered to myself what kind of magic prayer could make that kind of difference. My friend said that for him the key is to pray the prayer the moment he wakes up—even before he gets out of bed. He even said that he had awakened that morning at 4:30 AM so he prayed the prayer and then went back to sleep.

The prayer itself is the essence of simplicity. It goes like this:

“Heavenly Father, you are in charge of everything that will happen to me today--the good and the bad, the happy and the sad, the positive and the negative. Please make me thankful for everything that happens to me today. Amen.”

This prayer is powerful because it doesn’t change anything outside of me, but it does change everything inside of me. My circumstances don’t change, but my attitude does. And that’s why my friend looked so relaxed when we ate lunch.

Perhaps you need to take the 21-day challenge. Take that simple prayer and pray it first thing in the morning for the next 21 days and see what happens in your heart.
